Davao City will soon have two new convention centers in the next two years. This will further strengthen our bid to become one of the country’s MICE destinations. MICE tourism stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions.
Davao International Convention and Exhibition Center will be built on a two hectare property in Lanang. It is set to open late next year or early 2013. No details about the project yet except for its eyed seating capacity which is around 4000 people.
SM Prime Holdings will also be constructing a similar facility within their SM Lanang property (the mall is currently under construction with a mid rise international hotel chain linked into the mall). SM Prime plans to replicate its SMX project in their Mall of Asia complex in Metro Manila here in Davao City. The upcoming SM convention center is set to be completed in mid 2012.
Aside from these two convention centers, a multipurpose gymnasium that can also be converted into a convention facility is set to be completed. The facility has an 8000 seating capacity and is located within University of Southeastern Philippines’ campus.
Today, the biggest convention facility in Davao is the existing Central Bank Convention Hall which can only accommodate 2000 people.
