Left – Island Garden City of Samal and Right – Davao City
The Davao-Samal Island bridge will finally start its construction after the completion of the feasibility study. Faisal Kasim, the Chief Executive Officer of MCC Capital Projects Ltd of UK disclosed it in a press conference held in Davao City on Thursday evening (May 1, 2008). The feasibility study would only take about three months.
The bridge would cost roughly 120 million dollars and the financial institution (MCCCP) would extend the assistance to the Island Garden City of Samal in terms of a no interest loan which is payable in 30 years.
Once the project would be completed, MCCCP would develop commercial communities and opportunities in the island itself. Private Banking in the United States, which is one of MCCCP’s partners in this project, would also venture into two more projects in the island city and those are sewage system and medical care. MCCCP is also planning to put up a hotel and a convention center in the island.
With the upcoming influx of development in the island, the local government of Samal commits to preserve a huge portion of the island. The local government will only offer 20 percent of the island as areas to be developed. 80 percent will remain as it is. The local government had established 15 marine protected areas that are off limits to any type of development.
The planned bridge is hoped to have a 25 meter distance from the water level. It will be from Kilometer 10 Sasa, Davao City to Babak in the Island Garden City of Samal.
