Companies to beef up convention facilities

Davao City being named as the convention and exhibit destination of the Philippines will be reinforced with the entry of more businesses this year that will enhance existing facilities to cater to holding of events in the city. Councilor Peter Lavina, committee chair on trade, commerce and industry said four groups are investing into facilities that could accommodate more events. He named the groups as the John Gaisano Group, the Floirendo and Ayala, NCCC, and SM City. Although he did not elaborate on the Gaisano Group he said the Floirendo and Ayala will be developing the property of the Floirendo’s along JP Laurel Avenue of 10 hectares fronting the Redemptorist Church. He said part of the plan will be construction of high rise building that will house among others an ICT park. The two malls he said although they already have built in facilities for events are into expansion to cater to more conventions events and activities. “Once the facilities will be in place there is no stopping for Davao City to become the convention capital of the country,” he said. Meanwhile Lavina said they are also into initiating the organization of foreign businessmen operating in Davao City. He said the local German community here has formally formed their association with Francis Weis as president owner of Edelweis Restaurant in Matina where the organizational meeting was held last February 17. He said the effort of the Germans is a step for the mutual benefit of the city and foreigners. “The city is very interested to cooperate with foreign communities to push for cultural exchange, promote business ties and cooperation,” he said. He said they will also be talking with the Japanese and the Koreans and other foreign businessmen here to form their own organizations. (from MindanaoTimes)
